Phonics Phonics teaching at Manston St. James follows the ‘Phonics Bug’ scheme. ‘Phonics Bug’ is written by Joyce Watson and Rhona Johnston, authors of the widely-renowned research in Clackmannanshire, which proved that their teaching method improved children’s reading results. ‘Phonics Bug’ introduces phonemes in the order recommended by Letters and Sounds and provides a multi-sensory approach to teaching through a structured approach. Pupils in from Reception to Year 2 are taught daily, discrete phonics lessons but then have the opportunity to practice and apply their learning in different contexts. The ‘Phonics Bug’ scheme comes with various books that are designed to embed the phonics teaching that takes place in school. Our core reading scheme in school is Oxford Reading Tree and these books alongside the phonics books will be sent home for you to read with your children. Spellings Children in Year 3 and above now take home five spellings on a weekly basis which derive from the new National Curriculum. Three of these spellings are based around a set spelling rule which is taught during a lesson on a weekly basis and also embedded throughout other lessons during the week. The final two spellings are taken from a series of random words, again produced from the new National Curriculum which the children are expected to know by the end of their year group. Similarly, children in Years 1 and 2 take home 5 spellings, 3 of these are high frequency words and the other 2 words again follow a spelling rule or a sound which the children have been working on during their phonics lessons. These children are tested weekly but the high frequency words are used all the time in their writing. Any children in lower Key Stage 2 who require further phonics support alongside their spellings receive this through small, intensive group interventions. Children in Reception are focussing their attention to the sounds by using their phonic understanding whilst applying the new ‘Phonics Bug’ system we have introduced in school. Phonics Bug
